CAN WE STOP REWARDING MEDIOCRITY!?
Raging about the current kicker scoring, Ben would like the BBL to take a deeper look at how kickers are rewarded with points. Mad about Jake Elliot ending with six points on Thursday night, Ben’s new proposal would have had Elliot’s total at four points. Not a major adjustment but if you want to plant your flag on kicker scoring, go ahead.
However, another hill where a lot of flags might get planted real soon, is the “we should add a super flex” conversation.
Should we entertain the idea of converting from a two-quarterback league to a super flex league? The arguments will be loudly prevalent this week, where two squads are without a quarterback going into the weekend. Maybe we should put a limit on how many quarterbacks one team can hold at a time on their roster? Looking at you Galen and your FIVE quarterbacks on the roster!
Three weeks remain for teams to make their final playoff push. Two teams are essentially locked into the playoffs (unless disaster strikes) while the rest of the spots are up for grabs!
On to the recaps!
Icecaps dominate again, this time over Squatches, 202-88
There is no doubt who the best team in the league is and it’s not even close. Scoring over 200, the Icecaps can basically waltz into the playoffs with a bye. Five starters scored over 20 points including Burrow (36), Goff (43), Chase (20), Montgomery (24) and T. Hill (35). Nope not Tyreek Hill, TAYSOM Hill. Appearing to be unleashed under new head coach Darren Rizzi, could Hill be the final stamp to one of the most dominant teams in BBL history? Guess we will find out in January if this team can raise a banner.
This is the team I was expecting the last couple weeks, and it all came crashing back down to Earth this week for the Squatches. Seven starters scored less than 11 points in a dismal showing from the Fighting Lamar Jackson’s. With Lamar Jackson (17) and Bijan Robinson (7) combining for only 24 points, this team does not have enough pieces to withstand those low scoring performances. It gets worse. With Cousins on a bye this week AND the Giants opting to turn to Tommy DeVito instead of Drew Lock (or Daniel Jones), this team is without a quarterback next week. Be prepared for the super flex conversation in the coming days.
Avalanche keeps playoff hopes alive, knock of GWW 145-110
Sure is nice to have the highest scoring kicker of the week in Chris Boswell (25). That’s exactly what the Avalanche had this weekend. They also got solid performances from Herbert (29) and Jacobs (22) on their way to a convincing win over GWW. After falling last week to the Prairie Dawgs, the Avalanche are fighting for their playoffs hopes in the coming weeks. Once again, it gets worse. With Aaron Rodgers on a bye, this team is without a quarterback as well. Also be prepared for the super flex conversation.
Oh no. Where did we go wrong with this team? Six starters scored less than ten points and it seemed like they never had a chance on Sunday. (Especially after Chris Boswell and the Steelers happened). Credit where credit is due, last-minute pickup and spot start Will Dissly (15) was a great snag off the waiver wire. Otherwise, an uninspiring performance from a team that’s reeling from championship contention AND just lost their third straight matchup.
HSG throttles Misfits, 181-137
This team is dangerous. Five starters scored over 20 including Hurts (20), St. Brown (31), Kupp (23), Hall (25) and Joe Mixon (35). If anyone has made a strong case to compete with the Icecaps over the last month, it’s this team. With this dominant group of players, Tim has a good, make that a very good chance at raising his first ever banner this winter.
It was honestly a solid week for the Misfits with Stafford (36) and Barkley (34). Actually, when you take those two players out, it wasn’t very good at all. Some would call it a train wreck. Seven starters scored less than 12 points including McLaurin (1.5) and Gesicki (0) combining for less than two. While technically not eliminated, the Misfits would need to win out. The Avalanche await this week without a quarterback.
Thunder storm over Dawgs, 161-127
Are the Thunder back in the mix? It’s too early to tell but the 161 points certainly makes a case. Welcome back Anthony Richardson! 30 fantasy points and a game winning drive against the Jets should be enough to keep the starting job, right? RIGHT?? Do the right thing Shane Steichen. Nacua (21), Gibbs (19), Jennings (18) and the Vikings defense (19) led the way to their second straight win.
On paper the 127 points looks decent, but it was the third lowest total in a high scoring weekend for the league. Welcome back Tee Higgins (23) and shoutout Texans defense (28) for their dominance against the Cowboys. Otherwise, half the starters scored single digits in a lopsided loss. The battle of two 5-6 teams fighting for their playoff lives next week features the Dawgs and the Sandstorms.
Sandstorms earn much needed win, beat Piranhas 148-138
The Sandstorms needed a win and they got one thanks to Bo Nix (36), Achane (18), and Jonnu Smith (24). What a great waiver wire snag Smith turned out to be this week and probably was the difference between winning and losing. Actually, it was! Half the starters even scored single digits, but the Sandstorms got it done. As mentioned, a critical matchup is ahead this week against the Prairie Dawgs.
The playoffs hopes are slowly but surely deteriorating after this one. Outside of Allen (27), Tua (29), Jk Dobbins (18), and another touchdown from Tyreek Hill (14), it just simply wasn’t enough. Technically there was a path to victory if they started Brian Thomas (10) and the Denver defense (15), but it just doesn’t seem to be happening this year. Definitely needing to win out, a quarterback-less Squatches team awaits.
