Does Sean Payton regret taking the head coaching job in Denver? Not sure yet, but there is little to be desired after allowing 70 points and ten touchdowns to Miami. The one positive was that it was a scorigami! It was the 1077th unique score in NFL history (70-20). So that was cool.
But we weren’t done with the scorigami! We got another one Monday night when the Eagles beat the Bucs 25-11, marking the 1078th unique score in NFL history. Also cool!
What if I said you could have the number 1 fantasy running back through three weeks and that you could draft him with the final pick of the draft? That’s exactly what Tropical Thunder did, selecting Mr. Irrelevant Raheem Mostert at pick #160 in the 2023 BBL Draft. A 16th round steal, Mostert leads all running backs in points scored (in the BBL) and has helped propel the Thunder to an early 3-0 record.
On to the recaps!
Icecaps make another statement, destroy the Piranhas
The Icecaps have certainly proved they are a front runner with the play of Tua, Herbert and Hill carrying them offensively for 95 points. The Tua-Hill stack may have been one of the best decisions on draft day as the Icecaps move to 2-1. That does not come without tragedy though, as the Herbert-Williams stack will be unable to continue as Williams has a confirmed torn ACL, ending his season. I wouldn’t be too concerned though; the Icecaps have set themselves up for success.
I like throwing away money. After spending $65 on Jerome Ford, Jordan thought it would be a good idea to bench his investment and was promptly penalized for that decision. 17 points were left on the bench and who did he start instead? Bijan Robinson and Jaylen Warren who combined for 13. Jordan moves to 2-1 on the year.
Thunder put up 147 in rout of Squatches
The Thunder moved to their first 3-0 start in recent memory after scoring over 130 for the third time this season. In the aforementioned opening, the Trop is surfing through the season with the last pick of the draft Raheem Mostert. Mostert scored 39 points to pair with Mahomes’s 32 and Jefferson’s 23. The significant blemish on the roster was the Jaguars defense who scored -2 points in addition to Carlson who put up 3 points. That’s going to have to get fixed if they want to compete rest of year.
Generally, when your kicker scores over 21 points, you’re walking away a winner. You won’t walk away a winner if that same kicker was the high scorer for the team. That’s exactly what happened to the Squatches this week, as they moved to 0-3. Also of note, the -2 from the Jags defense was not the worst start in the matchup. Sam Howell threw four INT, including a pick-six on his way to -2.9 points. Now the Bills defense is tough, but it does not appear that Sam Howell is the answer for the Squatches. The combined 15 points from the quarterback position was the setback that the Squatches just couldn’t recover from. Maybe Galen will rethink picking this team in pick ‘em going forward, but who knows?
GWW slides by Avalanche on way to 3-0
Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. In the least entertaining matchup of the week, GWW moves to 3-0 despite scoring the second lowest point total in the league. Scoring just north of 100, it’s all they needed to take out Erk. Galen is also someone who likes throwing money away in FAAB budgets so far this season. I’d like to point of a quote from Ben after week 1 when he said, “Wow Galen already spent 1/3 of his FAAB… on someone who will average 6 points a game”. Those six points were still a reach because Kelley went 11 carries for a putrid 12 yards on Sunday, making his average over the last two weeks 3.5. Money well spent.
At this point you just gotta feel bad for Erk. His team tries but just doesn’t have it in them to compete. Clearly hampered by not being able to start Ekeler and Waddle, this team had seven players score in single digits. It does not get easier in the freeze bowl next week as they battle the Icecaps.
HSG puts up 174 over HCTM
HSG is also going to move to 3-0 after scoring 174 thanks in part to Cousins, Adams and Allen all scoring over 30 points. That trio is going to be hard to stop, especially if Justin Fields starts doing anything productive on the football field. Look out for this team to separate themselves in the coming weeks.
This is definitely the type of week you wanted to see if you’re the manager of HCTM, the problem is your opponent scored over 170. Zack Moss and his 25 points were a great free agent add on the year as there is slight optimism after this week. However whatever optimism was there is now gone, as Derek Carr could be out indefinitely with an injury. With Joe Burrow on the bench, this team rests on the status of Burrow’s calf.
Sandstorms right the ship, beat up the Misfits
The Sandstorms also put up 170, with six players scoring over 16 points. Two of those players scored over 30 including Jackson and Walker III. Kenny Pickett also beat his projection for this first time this year so perhaps this is a sign of good things to come, not only for the Steelers, but for the Sandstorms.
The Misfits as well had a quality output, they just ran into a 170-point performance. In the stellar defensive play of the week, 37 from Buffalo was not enough to compensate for the most questionable start/sit decision of the week. Josh Reynolds didn’t even record a target as his 0 points was a massive eye sore on this roster. The other bad news is that this team is 0-3. It’s not looking good.
Closing
Just because I have referenced them before, here are some interesting investments throughout the season so far, take them as you will.
35- Joshua Kelley (week 1 Galen)
65- Jerome Ford (week 2 Jordan)
Cheers!
