I Feel Bad for the Jets, Time to Panic on the Football Giants and the Same Old Lions?

The overall feeling of all of the hype and excitement surrounding the 2023 NFL season all culminated on Monday night when the league’s most prized offseason acquisition of Aaron Rodgers took the field for the New York Jets. There was no other feeling quite like it.

That dawn of a new era and optimism was met with shattered expectations and heartbreak, not only for Jets fan, but also if you were the Everglade Squatches. After a brief opening couple of snaps for the Jets, Rodgers tore his Achilles, ending his season before it started, which can also be said about the team Ezra drafted this year.

The New York football Giants never gave themselves a chance to win after getting throttled by the Dallas Cowboys 40-0 in one of the more un-competitive, outmatched games on the week one slate. The same can be said about Ezra, Blake, Ben and Logan this week.

Finally, the same old Lions are no more, as they took down the defending champs last Thursday in Arrowhead to spoil the banner unveiling ceremony. Which, actually the same can be said for defending champ Ezra as he lost his opener to Jack to kick off his season at 0-1.

Opening

Before I get into the recaps I would like to take a moment and recognize that we are entering the tenth season of the Books Boss League. Ten years of friendships and countless memories of draft days, mini golf outings and overall league chemistry. Thank you to everyone in the BBL.

A commemorative league logo has been created to honor the season, which can be seen above. Loyal League member Galen Fitzkee had this to say about the BBL,

“Wouldn’t want to be in any other league”

Okay maybe not a direct quote but let’s pretend he said it.

On to the recaps!

Icecaps beat the Squatches 179-99

After a slow start at 1:00 PM, it looked like Jack was not only going to be mad at the Steelers for playing badly, but also because he benched Brandon Aiyuk. Have no fear, Tua, Herbert and Tyreek Hill saved the day to destroy the Squatches. The highest scoring team of the week will always put the league on notice. Just imagine if he started Aiyuk with 27…

The Squatches had five players score in single digits but didn’t stand a chance against the Icecaps. The main concern for this team is the loss of Aaron Rodgers, a definitive blow to the postseason hopes. The San Francisco defense won’t be able to carry this squad all year so look for this team to make a trade. Or maybe Sam Howell is the answer, but I doubt it.

Hurts so Good beats the Avalanche 128-115

In the closest game this week, the ‘don’t take a qb early’ strategy took another victim as Erk fell to Tim. Tim doesn’t have Jalen Hurts but please don’t worry, Tim has discount Jalen Hurts in Justin Fields. His 13 points wasn’t great but it got the job done. He did have the Eagles defense which was a big factor in the win.

Erk took the Tropical Thunder approach this season on draft day and waited to select his quarterbacks and ended up with Russell Wilson and Baker Mayfield. They weren’t the issue surprisingly, as seven out of the other eight position players scored in single digits. Not a great week for the Avalanche.

Tropical Thunder beats the Misfits 132-75

Finally getting the memo that poor QB play doesn’t win titles, Book used a third round pick on Patrick Mahomes hoping to lead the Thunder back to the playoffs for the first time since 2020. With seven players in double digits, the 132 points was a great start for the Thunder, considering that would have been their second highest point total from all of last season. The Trop exceeded 130 points once last year, so hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.

Only scoring 75 points, Ben was not the lowest score shockingly. Eight players in single digits was not the answer and one manager is happy that he did not accept any trades involving Daniel Jones while having to give up Patrick Mahomes. I’m looking at you Ben.

GalensWinningWinners beat the Sandstorms 158-94

As the second highest scorer of the week, Galen is looking to turn it around as well. St. Brown, Ridley and McCaffrey appear to be a formidable core of players. But they weren’t even the best as the Dallas defense exploded to the tune of 42 points. I don’t have an official stat, but I feel comfortable saying that may just be the highest point total for a defense in league history.

Logan was not able to score over 100 this week, but we are going to give him a pass because he is just recently married. Good luck to the happy couple! May you have many years of a successful marriage! Hopefully a Sandstorm championship banner is in the works but time will tell.

Piranhas beats HCTM 106-72

There were bad starts on both sides of the rosters that frankly, were just terrible. The combined rosters saw nine players score single digits, seven of them on gimmicky player name Blake’s team. Credit to Blake though, he did draft Nick Chubb so the name is still accurate. The highest scorer in this weekly tilt was the Commanders defense with 17.50 on the Piranhas roster. Both teams might want to reevaluate some decision making going forward.

Good luck to all in week two!

Cheers!
