It’s week 15, which also means it’s playoff time in the BBL!
The Piranhas and Hurts so Good clinched first round byes and will see their next action in week 16 as they await the winners of this week’s quarterfinal matchups. Each of those squads are looking for their first championships.
The rest of the field has some familiar faces as well as one new face. The Squatches, HCTM and the Icecaps are looking for their second championship while the Misfits are looking for their first career playoff win in the championship bracket.
Let’s take a preview of the matchups!
3 Everglade Squatches vs. Tundra Icecaps 6
Winning both matchups this season, the Squatches have to be the favorite going into this quarterfinal. In addition, the Squatches have led the league in scoring over the last four weeks, peaking at the right time come postseason play. On a five game winning streak, the Squatches have what you want in a championship contender, consistency paired with big play ability. Watch out for this team.
The Icecaps are more of a wild card this postseason, with a lot of variability coming into this weekend. Dating back to week 11 the Icecaps have scored 107, 163, 157, and 122. Over that same stretch the Squatches haven’t scored less than 156. The Icecaps are going to need to nail every start sit decision this week to compete with the high scoring offense that the Squatches have. Last week alone, they sat James Conner and David Njoku, which could have brought their total to 149. It didn’t matter last week because the Icecaps already clinched, but that won’t get it done this week.
4 HCTM vs. Mistreated Misfits 5
HCTM unoriginally (of course) is also planning to sweep the season series against the Misfits but will need to find some answers. Actually both teams will need to find some answers as this projects to be the least entertaining matchup of the two quarterfinals bouts. Half the roster scored in single digits last week and does not provide confidence from an upside standpoint. Hanging around the 120-137-point mark in the last four weeks HCTM will live and die by Justin Fields and Nick Chubb. Unless something surprising happens, I would be shocked if this team made it past the semifinals.
But I wouldn’t be shocked if HCTM won because of the other team they have to face, which is the Misfits. Forced to start John Wolford who played three offensive snaps for the Rams, this team will once again have to hit the waiver wire for their second quarterback this weekend. The one thing going in their favor is that the ceiling is the roof. Despite getting zero points from Wolford last week, the Misfits still would have beaten HCTM if they played last week. With Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Miles Sanders and Tony Pollard, the Misfits could sneak their way into a semifinal appearance. But I don’t see this team making it past the semifinal either if they pull this one out.
