Week 5 Recap

Another exciting week in the BBL! Around the NFL, Detroit lost another game because of a last second field goal while Mason Crosby ended as the hero in the Packers overtime win against the Bengals, despite missing three kicks earlier in the game. The Bills, Buccaneers, Chargers, Cardinals and Cowboys continued their dominant performances and continue to provide excellent fantasy outputs for their managers. Even the Ravens came back from being down 22-3 to win an exciting matchup against the Colts. And who said Ja’Marr Chase is having trouble catching an NFL football?

On to the recaps!

GalensWinningWinners 192.46 – 131.75 Amazon Piranhas

This was certainly the most surprising game of the week. Galen was left for dead after the one o’clock games after facing the Tom Brady experience early in the day. They had middling performances by Ryan Tannehill (16), Aaron Jones (11) and Tee Higgins (5) in their early afternoon games while the rest of his team was not doing much better in the late afternoon. After being down a substantial margin, Galen had a half an hour stretch to remember late in the fourth quarter of the late games. Five touchdowns were scored for this team in the span of 30 minutes that flipped the switch for this matchup. Austin Ekeler (28) accounted for three of those touchdowns, while DeAndre Hopkins (15) and the Dallas defense (16) all contributed to the major swing of momentum in this matchup. Dawson Knox completely put the game out of reach with an 18-point performance Sunday night. If it wasn’t out of reach already, Lamar Jackson scored a massive 51 points to put the finishing touches on the 190-point week. The win was much needed for this squad as their record moves to 2-3, but their inconsistencies prove to be the only knock on this squad.

Well, there is not too much to say for this team outside of the aforementioned Tom Brady experience. Adding this player for a measly penny this week via trade, Brady scored a week altering 47 points for this squad. Generally, when a player scores over 40 points for your team, you should win. The key word is should in this situation. The Piranhas lost this matchup, which shows you how the rest of the team competed. They were not able to start Dalvin Cook or Christian McCaffrey due to injury and had to start Mike Davis (11) and Zach Moss (10). Those two are actually some of the highs for this roster if we added another 15 points from receiver Ceedee Lamb. Otherwise, this roster was still bad, with four players with less than five points. The Piranhas have arguably become the new villain of the league, after adding Dalvin Cook and Tom Brady for virtually nothing on their end. They sit at 1-4 but have a filthy potential lineup going forward.

Everglade Squatches 227.10 – 196.57 All I do is Winston

The highest scoring matchup this week (and most entertaining), the Squatches finally put something substantial together to the tune of over 227 points. Substantial it was, as the 227 points is a league record for a weekly score. (The previous record was 215 points scored back in 2015). It was a very impressive feat that will be etched into the record books this season. The only issue going forward is the manager that this record belongs to now. Here is a direct quote from Ezra Gorman about breaking the points scored in a week record:

“I’m the absolute worst person to have this record because you know I’m going to talk about it 24/7”

Oh, we know. We all know way too well the implications of this record going forward. Record aside, let’s talk about this historic roster this week. All ten starters scored double digits on a week where everything went right for this team. Justin Herbert one-upped Tom Brady and scored 51 points while Dak Prescott added 26. Antonio Brown scored 25 and Kyle Pitts shined in London with 19 points. Jonathan Taylor (30) and Marquise Brown (25) added to the team total on Monday night to push this team over 200 points. I could list the rest of this roster, but it would take too long because every single player would have to be mentioned as having a great output. This was clearly the highest output this season for any team in history, let alone this team and they certainly have something to build on going forward. After experience the floor for this roster multiple times, they saw the ceiling of what could potentially happen this season. Until this team shows some more consistency, we will either see a 100-point performance, or a 200-point week. They improve to 3-2 on the year.

I am at a loss of words for this team. It isn’t like this team is bad either, they just ran into a historic output. Winston scored the second most points in the league yet faced the highest scorer this week. Remember when we said that generally when a player scores over 40 points you should win? Here’s another instance of an outlier because Josh Allen scored 43 but it wasn’t enough for Winston. Derrick Henry also tried to bring home a win for this team by scoring 32 and Mike Evans added a great 24 points this week. Winston even got 19 points from kicker Greg Joseph but still fell short. Mark Andrews did his best on Monday night to try to sneak out a win and scored 32 points, but Jonathan Taylor and Marquise Brown said no to that. Winston will be mad they did not start Jameis Winston, as he scored 34 points but was left on the bench. His replacement Daniel Jones scored five points, but he left the game on Sunday with a concussion and was visibly wobbly getting up after getting drilled at the goal line. That unfortunately was a 29-point swing that still would not have won the matchup. For lack of a better word, Winston is getting unlucky matchups this season and sit at 1-4 despite the strong roster. Just to mention it, Terry McLaurin also did not help as he only scored five points. Watch out for this team going forward.

Philly Special 130.43 – 90.60 Tropical Thunder

Philly Special only scored 130 points but that is all they needed to beat the second lowest scoring team this week in the Thunder. Philly got off to a strong start with DK Metcalf on Thursday night who scored 22 points and never lost the lead the rest of the weekend. They got strong showings from Kareem Hunt (21), Greg Zuerlein (15) and the Carolina defense (16). Philly’s only bad decision was benching Ja’Marr Chase who continued his hot streak scoring 22. Otherwise, Philly missed projection by 20 points, but they aren’t complaining any time soon as they sit at 4-1 going into week 6.

Well, not a great output for the Thunder this week, scoring a lowly 90 points. Highlights from this team include Ezekiel Elliot (24) and Chuba Hubbard (14) and that’s it. The rest of the eight starters all scored in single digits, including both starting quarterbacks. The Thunder decided to get cute with their starting quarterbacks and opted to start Zach Wilson (7) over Matt Ryan (25) who was left on the bench. Wilson set the tone for the day for the Thunder scoring just south of eight points across the pond in London early in the day. Jared Goff was no better, scoring six points in the one o’clock slate of games. This team showed promise last week scoring over 150 but came crashing back down this week. It will be how this team responds going forward that will tell us how far this team can go this season. They sit at 3-2.

Tundra Icecaps 144.93 – 86.10 Hipple’s Heroes

This team is resilient. After having a rather lackluster start on Thursday (36 points from Russell Wilson, Matthew Stafford and Tyler Higbee), the Icecaps responded well on Sunday. DaVante Adams and Alexander Mattison led the way scoring over 28 and 20 points respectively. DeAndre Swift (17), Damien Williams (15) and Minnesota (14) tacked on solid points for the 144-point performance. Kicker woes continued, as Daniel Carlson only scored three points for the Icecaps. It did not matter, as the Icecaps did not need to do much facing the poorly constructed Hipple’s Heroes. The Icecaps are 4-1.

The trades are really starting to impact this squad tremendously, (not that they haven’t already). This team struggled to amount anything positive, except Antonio Gibson scoring 20 points. Sam Darnold did not help only scoring eight points while Brandon Aiyuk and Jared Cook each scored three points on the week. I would say this team should make a trade to contend this season but are running out of players to trade. They are currently 1-4 and in dire need of help. There is nothing else to say about this team.

Sahara Sandstorms 163.10 – 150.64 Hurts so Good

The Sandstorms are back in business this week, scoring 163 after scoring 119 last week. Mike Williams (29), Alvin Kamara (24), Darrell Henderson (17) and Najee Harris (21) all contributed to the stellar week for this team. Kyler Murray even only scored 15 points, yet the Sandstorms still put up a strong 163 points. Three players scored in single digits but the Sandstorms rebounded with his seven other starters providing excellent scoring outputs. This is the Sandstorm team that can compete well and have a formidable roster to contend for their first championship. They are 3-2 and face the Thunder next week.

It was a solid week for Hurts so Good, but 150 points was not enough in this matchup. Nick Chubb (24), Leonard Fournette (18) and the Buffalo defense (22) provided the solid point values for this team. Three starters scored in single digits including Tyler Lockett (6), Corey Davis (5) and Justin Tucker (2). HSG still managed 150 with these starters and have put themselves in a good position this season to succeed. They as well stand at 3-2 and face the Icecaps this week.

Around the League

Going forward managers will have to maneuver bye weeks from teams around the NFL. This is where teams with depth will start to separate themselves in the standings. Also, be on the lookout for the week 6 power rankings this week.

Cheers!
