On to the matchups!
Tundra Icecaps vs. GalensWinningWinners
The Tundra Icecaps dominated last week, scoring over 179 points to handle the Sandstorms to win their fifth consecutive game. With five starters scoring over 20 points, it did not matter that three starters combined for less than 13 points. Kyler Murray (34.90), Alvin Kamara (29.80), Justin Herbert (25.68), Antonio Gibson (20) and the Pittsburgh defense (22) carried the Icecaps to their eighth win on the year. The Icecaps were also able to break that winless streak for the Pittsburgh defense we mentioned last week. The Icecaps are built for a deep playoff run, as they could also get Austin Ekeler off IR potentially down the stretch. Fantasy MVP for the Icecaps has to be Kyler Murray, who has scored under 30 points just once all season (28.80). With production like this and the rest of the roster consisting of Justin Herbert, Alvin Kamara, and Calvin Ridley (just to name a few) would almost seem to make this team a lock for the championship. The Icecaps have to be feeling good right now, especially after clinching a playoff spot.
GWW scored over 141 points last week when they beat the Everglade Squatches to move into second place in the league. There were some doubts after the Thursday Night game, after Derrick Henry and AJ Brown combined for a little over 16 points, but they were soon extinguished late Sunday afternoon. Waiver wire pickup of the week kicker Tyler Bass scored 19.70 points for GWW, who certainly made a big difference in the final score. Also coming up big was the New Orleans defense, who scored 23.50 points and helped offset the poor performances from other starters. What really hurt this team and will going forward, is the loss of Drew Brees, who will be sidelined for a while with broken ribs and a punctured lung. GWW will turn to Jameis Winston to help guide them to a playoff appearance, and hopefully a first-round bye.
This matchup features the number one and two seeds in the league, which makes this game the BBL Week 11 Game of the Week!
Sahara Sandstorms vs. Philly Special
Well now we know what happens when Dalvin Cook doesn’t score 50 points, the Sandstorms lose. Jokes aside, even if Cook did score 50 points, the Sandstorms still would not have been able to beat the Icecaps. Sahara got good performances from Nick Chubb (22.10) and kicker Jason Sanders (15.40) but otherwise got nothing substantial. With the loss, it pushed the Sandstorms to 6-4 and fifth place in the league. They will be glad to get Matt Ryan back from bye, after they were forced to start Derek Carr who got 8.36 points. The Sandstorms will look to get back on track this week when they face Philly Special.
Also 6-4, Philly finds themselves in the sixth spot in the playoff picture this week. Philly barely scraped out a win last week, beating the Dawgz by a couple of points 137.57-135.40. They got bailed out by two Adam Thielen touchdowns and zero points coming from their opponent’s tight end position. They will take that win at any cost though, as this was their first win in five weeks. With half of their starters scoring in single digits, including a 0.70-point performance from Philip Lindsay, Tom Brady saved the day with a 40.09-point performance. They get Ezekiel Elliot back from bye, which should certainly help at the running back position. They will look to add to their win total this week when they face the Sandstorms.
Tropical Thunder vs. Everglade Squatches
Tropical Thunder took down Wentz upon a Time last week, scoring 131.09 points and moving to 6-4 on the year. Josh Allen and Josh Jacobs paved the way for the Thunder with 33.66 and 28.10 points respectively, as it marked their third straight win. The Thunder have slowly climbed their way into fourth place into the standings, but still need to work on their lineup down the stretch. They had four starters combine for less than 18 points (Chark Jr, D. Johnson, Hockenson, and Mooney). They get Julio Jones back from bye, which will help the depth of this team as they face the Everglade Squatches.
It’s another tough loss for the Squatches, who saw their lead slowly dwindle throughout Sunday afternoon to their eventual loss. The Squatches had some solid starts in Daniel Jones (24.96), Matthew Stafford (30.39) and Kareem Hunt (16.20). Unfortunately, half of their starters scored in single digits including Austin Hooper (1.60) and Will Fuller V (4.80). The loss does not bode well for the team, as they sit at 4-6 and seventh in the standings, one spot outside the playoff picture. The other bad part about that record is that they have the fourth most points in the league but have only four wins to show for it. With three weeks to go and two games out of the sixth spot, this is a must win for the Squatches. A loss wouldn’t eliminate them, it would just be extremely difficult to make the playoffs at 4-7. You can’t drop to 4-7 if you’re the Squatches.
Amazon Piranhas vs. Wentz upon a Time
It goes from bad to worse for the Piranhas, who lost their sixth straight to move to 3-7. The team they assembled last week could only muster 74.09 points, with six starters scoring four points or less. Their highest scorer was Tua Tagovailoa at 19.86 points. While technically not eliminated from playoffs, the Piranhas need to win out and have a lot go their way to make the playoffs. The Piranhas were just never able to recover from the mid-season Dak Prescott injury, just like the Cowboys themselves. They face Wentz upon a Time this week.
Wentz upon a Time turned in an unimpressive performance last week in their loss to the Thunder. Six starters scored in single digits, and Russell Wilson had his lowest scoring week with 13.37 points. That was not the recipe for a win and will never be. Currently in third place at 6-4, Wentz upon still needs to take care of business late in the season. Chalked up as a championship favorite early in the year starting 5-1, this clearly was too early to make that prediction. Over the last four weeks, Wentz has gone 1-3 and has lost their hold as one of the frontrunners in the league. While the Piranhas can’t seem to get anything right the past six weeks, Wentz should not take them lightly.
Prairie Dawgz vs. Fresh Prince of Helaire
The uninspiring matchup of the week, two 2-8 teams who have been eliminated from playoff contention.
The Prairie Dawgz had a win taken from them last week, after they got zero points from Jimmy Graham and watched opponent’s Adam Thielen score two touchdowns late Monday night. Big performances from Ben Roethlisberger (39.27) and Ronald Jones (26.80) made it look like the Dawgz would get another win after Sunday concluded. That was not the case, as they lost again, moving them to tenth in the league. The Dawgz are playing for pride at this point.
The same can be said about the Fresh Prince of Helaire. They won last week by only scoring 115.03 points, as Aaron Rodgers continues to carry this team to no avail. It has been a long year for Fresh Prince, who can’t catch any breaks. Well, I guess scoring the third lowest points week 10 and coming out with a win is a break but it doesn’t matter, Fresh Prince is headed for the consolation bracket.
